Gravel Driveways in Statesboro, GA

Gravel Driveways · Statesboro, GA

A gravel driveway that holds up starts under the stone

Gravel driveways in Statesboro fail from the bottom, not the top. Sandy topsoil under the stone soaks up water, the stone sinks, and ruts open along the tire tracks by the second wet season. Watson Outdoor Living builds gravel driveways the other way around. We strip the soft dirt, shape and pack a base, crown it so water runs off the sides, and put the stone on last. The CAT 275 track loader does the shaping and the CAT 308 excavator handles the digging.

We also fix the driveways that are already there. A washed out drive gets cut back to firm ground, regraded and topped with fresh stone instead of buried under another load. We set culvert pipe where the drive crosses a ditch and tie the base into it. When a drive needs a whole new route through the woods, that starts as land clearing. Call or text (912) 712-6034 and we will come look at yours.

Why do gravel driveways wash out around Statesboro?

Water is the whole story. Bulloch County gets close to four feet of rain a year, much of it in summer storms that drop an inch in an hour. A driveway with no crown holds that water in the middle. Tires push the wet stone down into the soft sand, and the low spot gets deeper every storm. Then the drive washboards where the water finally runs off the end.

Soft topsoil under the stone makes it worse. Bulloch County topsoil is loamy sand over clay, and the sand squeezes down under a loaded truck. We strip it off before any stone goes down. A packed base of native clay or hauled fill, shaped with a two to four percent crown, keeps the stone out of the mud. It keeps the water moving to the edges too.

How we build a new gravel driveway

Every drive starts with a look at where the water goes. Then the track loader strips the topsoil and grass off the route. Low spots get filled and packed, and the whole base gets crowned so rain runs to the sides. On soft ground we lay woven fabric over the base so the stone cannot sink into it. The base is most of the work and most of the life of the driveway.

Stone goes on in layers. A coarse base stone or crusher run gets spread and packed first. A finer top layer like #57 stone goes over it for the surface you drive on. Georgia DOT calls the packed base layer graded aggregate base, and it is the same idea under a county road. Ditch edges get pulled back where the ground allows so the sides drain. The last pass packs it tight. Spreading one load of fresh stone on an old drive falls under skid steer work.

Culverts, permits and the county road

Where a new drive meets a Bulloch County road, the county has rules. A new driveway on a county road needs a permit from the County Engineer. The county installs the pipe under the drive at the road for a set fee. The county's posted schedule lists $678.98 for a 15 or 18 inch pipe and $922.94 for a 24 inch pipe. The permit fee is waived when the county sets the pipe. State highways follow Georgia DOT rules instead.

Inside your property line the culverts are ours. We set pipe where the drive crosses a ditch or a wet draw, bed it to grade, and backfill and pack it so the drive does not sink over the pipe. Paved aprons are not allowed on county dirt roads, so a gravel apron is the standard out here. Water problems along the drive tie into our drainage work.

Gravel driveway repair and installation across Southeast Georgia

We work out of Statesboro and cover about 50 miles around it. That runs from Brooklet, Register and Portal to Metter, Claxton and Sylvania, and down toward Pembroke, Rincon and Richmond Hill. Long rural drives are common in every one of those places. We have torn out an old driveway and prepped the base for its replacement. On another job we set an extended culvert for drainage, hauled in nine loads of fill and finished with a tight grade.

Published 2026 guides disagree on price: Angi lists $1 to $10 per square foot and HomeGuide $4 to $10. Our Georgia gravel driveway cost guide walks through where those numbers come from. Long lanes that need culverts and heavy grading run higher. Regrading an existing drive costs less than building new. The pad and fill side of a new homesite sits on our dirt work page. We measure the drive, look at the water, and give you a free estimate. Call or text (912) 712-6034.

What You Can Expect

How a Job With Watson Runs

From the first look at the property to the last pass of the grapple, here is exactly how it goes.

1

Look at the Land

We come see the property first: the growth, the ground under it, access for the machines, and what you want the land to become. Clearing prices live in details a phone call cannot see.

2

Free Estimate

You get a real number and a real timeline, and what it covers is spelled out: clearing, stumps, grading, debris. It holds unless the scope changes, and you hear about any change before it costs anything.

3

Machines Do the Work

The CAT 275 and 308 show up when we said they would. Brush gets mulched or piled, trees and stumps come out, dirt gets shaped, and debris leaves on the trailer.

4

Finish Clean

We go over the finished ground with you before we leave. Smooth dirt you can mow, grade or build on, and a property that looks better than the day we pulled in.

FAQ

Gravel Driveways Questions, Answered

Common questions about gravel driveways across Statesboro & Southeast Georgia. Don't see yours? Call and ask.

Call (912) 712-6034

How much does a gravel driveway cost in Georgia?
Angi puts the average gravel driveway at $1,800, with most projects between $500 and $3,500. HomeGuide lists $4 to $10 per square foot installed. A long rural lane with culverts runs more. Base prep and drainage drive the price more than the stone does. Estimates are free.
What do you put down before gravel on a driveway?
A packed base. We strip the topsoil, fill and pack the low spots, and crown the base so water runs to the sides. On soft sandy ground we lay woven fabric over the base so stone cannot sink into it. Then a coarse base stone goes down and gets packed before the finer top stone.
Do I need a permit to put in a gravel driveway in Bulloch County?
For a new driveway that connects to a county road, yes. The Bulloch County Engineer issues the permit, and the county installs the pipe at the road for a set fee. Work inside your own property needs no permit. Driveways onto state highways follow Georgia DOT rules. We help you sort out which applies.
Can you fix a washed out gravel driveway?
Yes. We cut the ruts and washouts back to firm ground rather than dumping stone on top of them. The base gets rebuilt and crowned so water runs to the sides. Fresh stone goes down over it and gets packed. Ditch edges get pulled back where the ground allows.
What kind of gravel is best for a driveway?
Crusher run for the base and #57 stone for the top is the common pair in Southeast Georgia. Crusher run has fines in it that pack almost solid. #57 stone is clean three quarter inch rock that drains and rides smooth. Pea gravel looks nice but rolls and spreads, so it needs edging.
How long does a gravel driveway install take?
Most home driveways take one to two days once the machines are on site. A long farm lane cut through woods takes longer because the clearing comes first. Weather matters, since we do not pack a base on saturated ground. You get a time frame with the estimate.

Truly one of the best young men I’ve worked with. Him and his team exceeded my expectations. I’ve had them come for landscaping and debris removal, and each time I’m pleased. I recommended him to a few co-workers of mine and they consistently thought the pricing was reasonable.
