A Statesboro Crew Working Macon Ground

Watson Outdoor Living does land clearing in Macon, Georgia. Macon is the far west end of the ground we cover. We are based in Statesboro, and the run up I-16 to Bibb County takes about two hours with the machines on the gooseneck. We make that trip for jobs that fill a day or more, and the estimate is free either way. Macon and Bibb County merged into one government in 2014, so most of the county is Macon now, from the Ocmulgee River downtown out to Lizella and Lake Tobesofkee on the west side and Hartley Bridge Road on the south.

The ground here is unlike anything in our home county. Macon sits on the fall line, where the rolling Piedmont hills meet the flat coastal plain. North of town the lots climb, and the soil turns to red clay under oak and hickory. South of town the ground flattens into deep sand over clay, and pine takes over. A tract in Shirley Hills clears differently than a tract off Houston Road. The CAT 275 track loader with the forestry mulcher handles the brush and small trees on both. The CAT 308 excavator digs out the stumps, roots and all, and the debris leaves on the dump trailer or gets mulched in place.

What is different about clearing land in Bibb County?

Clay. The north half of Bibb County is Piedmont ground, and under the topsoil sits red clay that holds water after a rain and turns hard in a dry spell. Stumps in clay come out with more effort than stumps in sand, because the roots grip and the dirt does not fall away from them. We plan those jobs for the excavator from the start. On the south side the sand hills drain fast, and a cleared lot there dries out and grows back in scrub pine within a few seasons if nothing gets planted.

Slope matters here too. Shirley Hills was platted in 1922 on wooded hills, and much of North Macon carries the same canopy of pine, dogwood and magnolia. A wooded lot on that side can fall away steeply from the street to the back line. We keep the mulcher on the slope and let the track loader spread its weight instead of cutting ruts. Brush clearing under the big trees opens the lot up without taking the canopy that gives those streets their shade.

Where we work around Macon

Most of the Macon calls we can take are on the edges of the county, where lots run to acreage. That means the Lizella and Lake Tobesofkee side out Highway 80 west, the Hartley Bridge Road corridor south toward I-475, and the farm and timber ground east of the Ocmulgee toward the Twiggs County line. Closer in, we take wooded lots in North Macon and along the Gray Highway side where a house is going up or a backyard has gone back to woods.

Bigger tracts work best for the drive. Forestry mulching on several acres, a homesite that needs clearing, stump removal after a timber cut, or grading for a pad and driveway all fit. A single stump in a subdivision yard usually does not, and we will tell you that on the phone rather than charge you for the trip.

Truly one of the best young men I’ve worked with. Him and his team exceeded my expectations. I’ve had them come for landscaping and debris removal, and each time I’m pleased. I recommended him to a few co-workers of mine and they consistently thought the pricing was reasonable.

What does land clearing cost in Macon?
Cost depends on the acreage, how thick the growth is, and whether stumps come out. Clay ground on the north side of Macon adds time to stump work. Travel from Statesboro is built into the estimate, so bigger jobs price better per acre than small ones. We look at the property in person and give you a free estimate.
How far is Macon from your base?
About 110 miles. We are in Statesboro, and I-16 runs most of the way, so the machines ride up on the gooseneck in about two hours. We take Macon and Bibb County jobs that fill at least a full day. Call or text (912) 712-6034 with the address and the acreage, and we will tell you quickly whether the trip makes sense.
Do you clear land in Lizella and the Lake Tobesofkee area?
Yes. The west side of Bibb County out Highway 80 has the kind of acreage that fits our equipment. Lizella, the lake lots on Tobesofkee, and the ground toward the Crawford County line are all inside the range we cover from Statesboro. Free estimates after a look at the property.
