Drainage & French Drains in Statesboro, GA

Drainage · Statesboro, GA

Standing water in the yard has a path out. We dig it.

Drainage work in Statesboro starts with the ground under the grass. Most yards here are a foot or two of loamy sand sitting on clay. Rain soaks in fast, hits the clay and spreads sideways with nowhere to go. Watson Outdoor Living installs French drains, cuts swales and sets culvert pipe so that water has a way off your property. We dig it with a CAT 308 excavator and shape the surface with a CAT 275 track loader.

A French drain is a gravel filled trench with a perforated pipe in the bottom. Water drops into the gravel, enters the pipe and runs downhill to a ditch or a low corner. We also handle the bigger drainage moves, like a swale across a flat lot or a pipe under a farm crossing. When the whole yard needs reshaping, that becomes land grading and leveling. What We Handle

  • French drain installation with perforated pipe, filter fabric and washed stone
  • Downspout drain lines run underground to a daylight outlet
  • Swales cut across flat lots to move standing water off
  • Culvert pipe set under farm crossings and ditch crossings, then backfilled
  • Low spots dug out and regraded so water runs instead of sits
  • Catch basins and yard drains tied into buried pipe
  • Wet spots along fence lines and shop pads drained
  • Trench spoil hauled off or spread as fill on site

Why does my Statesboro yard hold water after every rain?

Bulloch County soil explains most of it. The county's biggest soil map unit is Pelham loamy sand, about 62,000 acres of it. The USDA rates it poorly drained, with a water table within a foot and a half of the surface part of the year. The Tifton and Fuquay loamy sands on the higher ground drain well up top, but they sit on a clay rich subsoil. Water moves down through the sand and stops at the clay.

Add close to four feet of rain a year and flat lots, and you get a yard that stays soft for days. You see it as dead grass in the low spot, ruts by the shop door and water against the slab after a summer storm. Drainage fixes give that water a lower place to go. Sometimes that is a pipe. Sometimes it is just a swale cut to the ditch.

How does a French drain installation work?

We start by finding the fall. Water only moves downhill, so the outlet has to sit lower than the wet spot. The excavator trenches from the problem area to the outlet, usually 12 to 24 inches deep with a steady slope. Filter fabric lines the trench so sand does not fill the pipe. Perforated pipe goes in the bottom, washed stone goes over it, and the top gets sod or more stone.

Downspout lines work the same way without the gravel. Solid pipe carries roof water from the house to a daylight outlet at the ditch or the back of the lot. On a flat Bulloch County lot the outlet is the hard part, and we tell you up front if the fall is not there. Jobs that need engineered plans start with an engineer. Most yard drainage does not.

Swales, culverts and the county right of way

Not every drainage problem wants a pipe. A shallow swale cut across a lot moves more water than a French drain, and it costs less. We shape it with the track loader so it mows like the rest of the yard. Culvert pipe carries water under a farm road or a path so the road stops washing. We set the pipe to grade, bed it, and backfill and pack it.

Pipe under a driveway where it meets a county road works differently. Bulloch County will install that driveway pipe for a set fee. Any digging in the right of way needs a permit from the County Engineer. We handle the pipe on your side of the line and the driveway itself. That part of the work sits on our gravel driveways page.

Yard drainage across Bulloch County and Southeast Georgia

We work out of Statesboro and cover about 50 miles around it. That takes in Brooklet, Register, Portal, Metter, Claxton and Sylvania close in, and Rincon, Springfield, Pooler and Richmond Hill toward the coast. Flat sandy lots hold water the same way in all of them. On one recent job we set an extended culvert for drainage, hauled in nine loads of fill and finished with a tight grade after a stump came out.

Published 2026 guides put exterior French drains around $10 to $35 per foot installed, with 50 to 100 feet a common run. Your number depends on the fall, the outlet and how much pipe the yard needs. Deeper digging for footings and pits sits on our excavation page. We look at the ground first and the estimate is free. Call or text (912) 712-6034.

What You Can Expect

How a Job With Watson Runs

From the first look at the property to the last pass of the grapple, here is exactly how it goes.

1

Look at the Land

We come see the property first: the growth, the ground under it, access for the machines, and what you want the land to become. Clearing prices live in details a phone call cannot see.

2

Free Estimate

You get a real number and a real timeline, and what it covers is spelled out: clearing, stumps, grading, debris. It holds unless the scope changes, and you hear about any change before it costs anything.

3

Machines Do the Work

The CAT 275 and 308 show up when we said they would. Brush gets mulched or piled, trees and stumps come out, dirt gets shaped, and debris leaves on the trailer.

4

Finish Clean

We go over the finished ground with you before we leave. Smooth dirt you can mow, grade or build on, and a property that looks better than the day we pulled in.

How much does it cost to install a French drain?
Published 2026 guides put exterior yard French drains around $10 to $35 per linear foot installed, so a 50 foot run often lands between $500 and $1,800. Depth, the outlet and how much stone the trench takes move the number. We measure the fall and give you a free estimate after seeing the yard.
How deep does a French drain need to be?
Most yard drains run 12 to 24 inches deep. The trench needs a steady downhill slope from the wet spot to the outlet, and the outlet sets the depth. On a flat lot the drain gets deeper as it runs. A drain that protects a foundation footing goes deeper than one drying a soggy lawn.
Can I fix bad drainage without a French drain?
Often yes. Grading the low spot so it sheds water, cutting a swale to the ditch or extending downspouts to daylight fixes plenty of Statesboro yards. A French drain is for water that soaks in and sits below the surface. We look at where the water comes from and tell you the simplest fix that will hold.
Do I need a permit for drainage work in Bulloch County?
Drainage inside your own lot usually needs no permit. Work in the county road right of way, including a new driveway pipe, needs a permit from the Bulloch County Engineer, and the county will set the pipe under a driveway for a set fee. Inside Statesboro city limits the city has its own stormwater rules. Ask us and we will point you to the right office.
What is the difference between a French drain and a swale?
A French drain is a buried gravel trench with a pipe that collects water below the surface. A swale is a shallow open channel shaped into the lawn that carries surface water away. Swales move more water for less money on flat ground. French drains work where the water is in the soil, not on top of it.
Do you handle culvert pipe?
Yes. We set culvert pipe under farm roads, paths and ditch crossings, bed it to grade and backfill it packed. Pipe under a driveway at a county road is installed by Bulloch County under its permit. We handle the drainage pipe on your side and the driveway base and stone.

Truly one of the best young men I’ve worked with. Him and his team exceeded my expectations. I’ve had them come for landscaping and debris removal, and each time I’m pleased. I recommended him to a few co-workers of mine and they consistently thought the pricing was reasonable.
